LISA SAUNDERS

Thanksgiving 2023!
Two years ago, we enjoyed a full-on Dalrymple Thanksgiving in Pinehurst! We had all our children and all the dogs too! Last year, our children spent Thanksgiving with the “outlaws”… as we lovingly refer to the other parents we now share holidays with.
This year, we will be together again, starting on Wednesday night in Charlotte with my extended family for our Oyster Roast. My niece, Nicole, and her husband, Gardner, are hosting this year. From generation to generation! Our family oyster table, built by my nephew and godson, Scott, reflects those generations. They all descended from my grandparents, Mary and James Monsour, who came to this country as teenagers.

We will then make our way to Pinehurst to enjoy all our Dalrymple family traditions. We start at Pine Needles with Bloody’s and Burgers. Naps and walks follow before we dress for dinner.

It’s important for you to know that I have never cooked a turkey or hosted Thanksgiving dinner because we always spend Thanksgiving in Pinehurst. The menu and photos I’m sharing in this newsletter are all thanks to my sister-in-law, Liz!
Liz always knocks it out of the park on Thanksgiving Day with a delicious menu and a beautiful table, while Chris slices the country ham and turkey … and, of course, makes sure the bar is fully stocked. Divide and conquer!
Thanksgiving Menu
MENU
- Charcuterie
- Thanksgiving Turkey with Stuffing
- Bourbon Sweet Potatoes
- Collards
- Brussel Sprouts with Radicchio and Pancetta
- Sister Schubert’s Parker House Style Yeast Rolls
- Bourbon Pecan Pie
- Chocolate Chess Pie

Liz always makes Thanksgiving special with a beautifully set table.

While I so appreciate the way we “do Thanksgiving” with Liz’s beautiful table and our men in sports coats, I also believe what is most important is simply being gathered with family and friends. What is most important is enjoying this time, giving thanks for all our many blessings, and remembering those who are suffering.

If you are hosting Thanksgiving, I hope this newsletter helps you think about how you can make it special, whether your table is casual or formal.
I also hope this helps you plan, prep, and prepare ahead so you can truly enjoy the day. And remember … ask others to help.
One of my most favorite pages in Effortless Entertaining is from Mary Beaver. Her Thanksgiving Helper job chart is brilliant!
